Trauma Therapy

Couseling to help you finally move forward after trauma.

  • Healing is possible.

It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

  • There's no shame.

You did not deserve what happened and there’s no shame in what you experienced. According to SAMHSA’s National Child Traumatic Stress Initiative (NCSTI) more than two thirds of children experience at least 1 traumatic event by age 16. Therapy is a brave first step to be commended, and making your way here is already the first step towards progress.

  • It's not your fault.

When we are in survival mode, research shows that our nervous systems responds in automatic ways. These natural alarm systems in the body are not always a conscious choice, but serve as a means of survival to help keep us safe. We can help you unpack what happened, why you showed up the way you did (or didn’t) when you experienced a traumatic situation.

Not all trauma is the same. We have trauma therapy for your specific type of trauma.

PTSD

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) stems from experiencing, or witnessing, a traumatic event. You felt like your life or your sense of safety, or you witnessed someone else’s life or sense of safety, being threatened. Events could include actual or threatened death, serious injury, or sexual violence. These traumas might be violent or accidental. Those who experience PTSD have symptoms of flashbacks, severe anxiety, fear, depression, nightmares or insomnia, and/or dissociation. Avoiding the distressing memories, thoughts, or feelings might interfere with one’s quality of life. Other symptoms might include gaps in memories, self-hatred / distorted self-blame, distrust in others, horror, anger, guilt, shame, hypervigilance, or difficulty concentrating all for more than one month. PTSD symptoms negatively impact important areas of one’s life including social, occupational, or relational dynamics.

Complex PTSD

Complex PTSD (Post Trauma Stress Disorder) stems from chronic or ongoing forms of trauma rather than from a singular traumatic event. The frequency to which one experienced the trauma categorizes it as CPTSD. Symptoms might include dissociation, low feelings of worth and self-esteem, perfectionism, people pleasing, anger issues, emotional flashbacks, and unhealthy boundaries. People who have experienced CPTSD tend to struggle feeling present, satisfied in their relationships and report not feeling good enough, suicidal thoughts, or chronic disappointment. They sometimes report that life generally doesn’t feel safe, and even when in a calm moment, they’re waiting for the other shoe to drop, often feeling like they’re in a constant state of survival.

Relational abuse from a narcissistic partner, family member, friend, or coworker leaves emotional scars that the outside world can’t always see. The narcissistic abuse cycle can happen in relationships with family, friends, romantic partners, and coworkers. The stages within the abuse cycle are manipulative and exploitive leaving the victim feeling devalued, dismissed, invalidated, or depressed and anxious. These unhealthy relationship dynamics include various stages: love bombing, the devaluing stage, discard stage, hoovering, and smear campaign. Someone who experienced a narcissistic relationship likely endured emotional abuse, gaslighting, manipulation, lying, boundaries being overstepped, being taken advantage of, lack of empathy, social isolation, etc. Narcissistic behavior can be deeply painful and damaging to one’s well-being and sense of self.

Narcissistic Abuse

Compassion is our first approach.

Self-compassion is a much better motivator than shame. It’s easier to take action towards your goals when the therapist encouraging you feels safe, the environment is friendly, and you’re not feeling judged.

In order to be present we need to face our pain instead of avoiding or numbing it away. And that is a brave step.
